Considered one of the most sacred months in the Hindu calendar, it symbolises devotion, self-discipline, purity and introspection. The month inspires people to rise early, offer prayers, light lamps, observe religious vows and devote time to spiritual practices. In Odisha, the sanctity of Kartika Masa is closely associated with Lord Jagannath and the age-old tradition of Habisyali Brata observed by women devotees in Puri. The sight of devotees offering prayers, lighting lamps and visiting temples reflects the deep-rooted faith and cultural heritage of our society. However, the true significance of this sacred month extends beyond rituals and ceremonies. It encourages us to purify our thoughts, control our desires, practise humility and bring greater discipline into our everyday lives. Just as a lamp dispels darkness, the light of faith and wisdom can guide us away from ignorance, selfishness and negativity towards truth, compassion and righteousness.

As a police officer, I believe that the values associated with Kartika Masa have profound relevance to public life and responsible citizenship. Discipline, honesty, restraint, compassion and a sense of duty are essential not only for spiritual growth but also for building a peaceful and harmonious society. True devotion must find expression in our conduct towards others. Helping the poor, supporting the vulnerable, respecting the elderly, protecting women and children, and standing beside those in distress are meaningful expressions of humanity. For the police, the spirit of service must be reflected in impartial action, sensitivity towards citizens and a firm commitment to justice. Faith becomes truly meaningful when it strengthens our resolve to serve society with integrity and empathy. Kartika Masa also reminds us of our responsibility towards nature and the community. By keeping our surroundings clean, conserving resources, avoiding unnecessary waste and respecting public spaces during religious observances, we can ensure that our traditions remain both meaningful and environmentally responsible. In today’s fast-paced world, this sacred month offers an opportunity to pause, reflect on our actions, correct our shortcomings and renew our commitment to truth, peace and social harmony.

The greatest message of Kartika Masa is that spirituality must illuminate not only our homes and temples but also our hearts and actions. Lighting a lamp is a beautiful tradition, but lighting the lamp of kindness in someone’s life is an equally noble act. Offering prayers to God becomes more meaningful when accompanied by compassion for fellow human beings, respect for every individual and sincerity in fulfilling our responsibilities. The essence of religion lies not in outward observance alone but in the values we practise every day. Let us therefore use this holy month to rise above hatred and prejudice, strengthen bonds of brotherhood, extend a helping hand to the needy and contribute to a society founded on trust, dignity and mutual respect. May Kartika Masa bring peace to our minds, purity to our thoughts, discipline to our conduct and compassion to our hearts. Let us resolve to make the light of devotion a lasting force for public service, human welfare and social harmony. When faith inspires good deeds and prayer transforms into service, the true spirit of Kartika Masa finds its highest expression.

By Dr Satyajit Naik,IGP, Cuttack Kartika Masa holds a special place in India’s spiritual and cultural traditions.
