Taraprasad Mishra

A celebration becomes meaningful not because of how loudly we express our happiness, but because of how responsibly we share it with others. Music is an expression of joy, culture and togetherness. However, when entertainment crosses the limits of decency and becomes a source of public disturbance, it is time for society to pause and reflect. The growing culture of excessively loud DJ music during festivals, processions and social gatherings calls for a collective rethink. The message we must carry forward is clear: DJ No, Life Yes.

Festivals are an integral part of our social and cultural identity. They bring communities together, strengthen relationships and create an atmosphere of happiness. Unfortunately, in many places, the spirit of celebration is increasingly being overshadowed by high-decibel sound systems, uncontrolled music and competitive displays of noise. What is intended as entertainment often becomes a source of suffering for people who have no choice but to endure it.

Excessive noise is not merely an inconvenience. It can affect physical and mental well-being, disturb sleep, increase stress and create difficulties for patients, elderly people, infants and students. Hospitals, educational institutions and residential neighbourhoods deserve a peaceful environment. The right to celebrate cannot be allowed to override another person’s right to live peacefully.

Another serious concern is road safety. During processions and public celebrations, the combination of loud music, overcrowded roads, dancing vehicles and irresponsible driving can create dangerous situations. Young people sometimes become so carried away by excitement that they overlook basic safety precautions. A moment of carelessness can lead to an accident, turning a joyful occasion into an unbearable tragedy.

We must understand that the real strength of a society lies in its sensitivity towards others. No religious festival, cultural programme or social occasion demands excessive noise. Devotion is reflected through faith, discipline and compassion, not through the volume of loudspeakers. Similarly, happiness does not require disturbing the peace of an entire neighbourhood.

The responsibility for change belongs to everyone. Festival committees should adopt sound and safety guidelines, DJ operators should follow prescribed noise limits and permitted timings, and citizens should cooperate with the police and administration. Authorities must enforce applicable regulations firmly and impartially. Organisers should also encourage traditional music, devotional performances, cultural programmes and community participation.

Young people have a particularly important responsibility. They are the architects of tomorrow’s society and must demonstrate that entertainment and discipline can go hand in hand. Choosing a peaceful celebration is not a sign of weakness; it is a reflection of maturity and social responsibility.

Technology should make our lives better, not endanger them. Modern celebrations must be guided by awareness, compassion and respect for public safety. The success of a festival should be measured by the happiness it creates, the harmony it preserves and the memories it leaves behind.

Let us make a collective commitment to celebrate without creating suffering for others. Let the sound of humanity rise above the noise of machines. Let every procession become an example of discipline, every festival a symbol of harmony and every celebration an opportunity to protect life.

A loudspeaker can amplify music, but only a compassionate heart can amplify humanity. Let us choose peace over noise, responsibility over recklessness and life over uncontrolled celebration. DJ No, Life Yes!

By Er.
