Dussehra: A Timeless Message of the Triumph of Good over Evil

By Er. Taraprasad Mishra
Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of India’s most significant festivals, celebrating the eternal victory of good over evil, truth over falsehood, and righteousness over injustice. Observed with deep devotion and enthusiasm across the country, the festival carries a timeless message that transcends religious boundaries and cultural differences. It reminds us that no matter how powerful evil may appear, truth and virtue will ultimately prevail. The festival is not merely a celebration of a mythological victory; it is an opportunity to reflect on our own lives, strengthen our moral values and renew our commitment to building a just, peaceful and compassionate society.
The festival is closely associated with two important traditions in Indian mythology. In the Ramayana, Dussehra marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, symbolising the triumph of righteousness over arrogance, greed and wrongdoing. In another tradition, Vijayadashami celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, representing the power of divine strength to overcome destructive forces. Both narratives convey a common message: power without morality leads to downfall, while courage guided by truth and justice creates the foundation for a better world. The burning of Ravana’s effigies during Dussehra serves as a powerful reminder that evil must be confronted and eliminated, not only in society but also within ourselves.
In contemporary society, the significance of Dussehra extends far beyond religious rituals and festive gatherings. Ravana can be seen as a symbol of the negative qualities that continue to challenge humanity, including anger, greed, jealousy, dishonesty, hatred and ego. These weaknesses often damage relationships, undermine social harmony and obstruct collective progress. The real celebration of Dussehra begins when we make a conscious effort to overcome these shortcomings. Instead of limiting the festival to the symbolic burning of effigies, we should strive to eliminate the Ravana within us by embracing honesty, humility, compassion, discipline and respect for others. Such a transformation would give the festival a deeper meaning and make its message relevant to every generation.
Dussehra also teaches us the importance of courage, duty and responsibility. Lord Rama’s life represents the values of sacrifice, commitment, patience and adherence to righteousness even in the face of adversity. His journey reminds us that the path of truth may be difficult, but abandoning our principles for temporary gains can never lead to lasting success. In our personal and professional lives, we must uphold integrity, fulfil our responsibilities sincerely and stand firmly against injustice. Parents should nurture moral values in their children, teachers should inspire students to become responsible citizens, and public servants should place honesty and public welfare above personal interests. When individuals perform their duties with sincerity and dedication, the entire society becomes stronger.
The festival also provides an opportunity to strengthen unity, brotherhood and mutual respect. In a diverse country like India, festivals bring people together across communities and generations. The celebrations, traditional performances, Ramlila, Durga Puja and community gatherings create an atmosphere of shared happiness and cultural pride. However, the true spirit of celebration lies not in grandeur or expenditure but in kindness, inclusion and concern for those who are less fortunate. We should celebrate responsibly, maintain peace, respect different beliefs and extend a helping hand to the poor, the elderly and the vulnerable. Environmental responsibility should also be an integral part of our celebrations, encouraging us to reduce waste, avoid unnecessary pollution and protect nature for future generations.
Ultimately, Dussehra is a call for personal transformation and collective responsibility. It reminds us that the victory of good over evil must be renewed every day through our thoughts, words and actions. Let us use this auspicious occasion to conquer our weaknesses, reject hatred, practise forgiveness and uphold truth in every sphere of life. Let us build families founded on love, workplaces guided by integrity and communities strengthened by compassion and harmony. The real significance of Vijayadashami will be fulfilled when the light of righteousness shines in every heart and justice, peace and humanity guide our actions. May this Dussehra inspire us to destroy the darkness of ignorance, defeat the forces of negativity and move forward with courage, wisdom and hope towards a brighter future.
