The departure of Maa Durga at the end of the auspicious Durga Puja festival is an emotionally moving moment for millions of devotees. After days of prayers, rituals, celebrations and spiritual gatherings, the time comes to bid farewell to the Divine Mother. The sound of devotional songs, the rhythmic beats of traditional drums, the chanting of mantras and the cries of “Jai Maa Durga” fill the air as devotees accompany the Goddess on her final journey before immersion. Although the farewell brings tears to many eyes, it also renews faith, strengthens hope and reminds us that the bond between the Divine Mother and her children is eternal. Maa Durga may depart from the pandals, but her blessings, courage and divine presence remain alive in the hearts of her devotees.

Durga Puja is not merely a religious festival; it is a celebration of the victory of good over evil, truth over falsehood and courage over fear. Maa Durga represents divine strength, compassion, justice and the power to overcome adversity. Her victory over Mahishasura symbolises the eternal struggle between righteousness and evil. The festival reminds us that no matter how powerful injustice may appear, truth and goodness will ultimately prevail. As we bid farewell to the Goddess, we must reflect on the values she represents and make a sincere commitment to uphold them in our everyday lives. True devotion is not confined to offering flowers, lighting lamps or participating in rituals; it is reflected in our conduct, our respect for others and our willingness to stand beside those who need help.

The immersion procession is one of the most touching moments of the celebration. Women offer prayers and apply vermilion as they seek the blessings of the Divine Mother. Children watch with wonder, while elders pray for peace, prosperity and happiness in their families. Devotees dance to the beats of traditional instruments, and the streets resonate with expressions of faith and emotion. Yet, beneath the festive atmosphere lies a deep sense of separation. The Goddess who has been welcomed with devotion and worshipped with affection is now being sent back to her celestial abode. This emotional farewell reflects a timeless truth of life: every arrival is followed by a departure, but the memories, values and blessings associated with every meaningful relationship continue to guide us.

The farewell to Maa Durga also offers an important lesson in social harmony and collective responsibility. During the festival, people from different communities, backgrounds and walks of life come together to celebrate with a shared spirit of devotion. Religious differences and social divisions often give way to friendship, cooperation and mutual respect. This spirit must continue long after the festival ends. We should carry the message of unity into our homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods, showing kindness to the vulnerable, respecting women, protecting children and helping those facing hardship. A society becomes stronger when its people rise above differences and work together for the common good. If we truly seek the blessings of Maa Durga, we must build a society where dignity, equality, compassion and justice are valued by all.

As the immersion processions move through the streets, the need for discipline, patience and responsible behaviour becomes particularly important. Devotion should always be accompanied by a sense of duty towards fellow citizens. Organisers, volunteers and members of the public must cooperate with the administration and police to ensure that the celebrations conclude peacefully. People should follow traffic regulations, avoid overcrowding, refrain from the use of intoxicants and stay away from reckless behaviour. Rumours and provocative messages on social media must not be circulated, as irresponsible communication can disturb peace and create unnecessary tension. Special care should be taken to ensure the safety of women, children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. A peaceful and orderly farewell is itself a tribute to the Goddess, whose divine message inspires discipline, courage and responsibility.

For the police, festivals such as Durga Puja are occasions to serve the public with vigilance, sensitivity and dedication. Effective security arrangements, traffic management, crowd regulation and coordination with organisers are essential to ensure that devotees can celebrate without fear. At the same time, policing must remain people-friendly, accessible and humane. The police and the public share a common responsibility for maintaining peace and protecting lives and property. Cooperation, mutual trust and timely communication can prevent many difficulties during large public gatherings. As we bid farewell to Maa Durga, let us remember that public safety is not the responsibility of the administration alone; it is a collective duty. Every citizen can contribute by acting responsibly, helping others and respecting the law.

The departure of Maa Durga should also inspire us to confront the evils that continue to affect society. Violence against women, child abuse, discrimination, corruption, substance abuse and cybercrime are challenges that require sustained collective action. The symbolic destruction of Mahishasura will have real meaning only when we work to eliminate injustice and cruelty from our own lives and surroundings. We must encourage girls to pursue their dreams, protect children from exploitation, support victims of wrongdoing and promote education, awareness and ethical values among young people. The strength of Maa Durga teaches us not to remain silent in the face of injustice. Her compassion reminds us to help those in distress, while her courage inspires us to act with determination and integrity.

As the sacred idol is immersed in water, devotees pray for the return of the Divine Mother the following year. The moment of immersion carries a profound spiritual message: forms may disappear, but faith remains; celebrations may end, but devotion continues. Maa Durga returns to her heavenly abode, leaving behind memories of togetherness, lessons of righteousness and renewed hope for a better future. Her blessings are not limited to the days of the festival. They should guide our decisions, strengthen our conscience and inspire us to become more responsible members of society. The true celebration of Durga Puja begins when we translate its spiritual teachings into everyday action.

Let us bid farewell to Maa Durga with tearful eyes but hopeful hearts. Let us pray for peace in every home, harmony in every community, safety for every woman and child, and dignity for every human being. May the Divine Mother give us the strength to overcome fear, the wisdom to distinguish right from wrong and the compassion to stand beside those in need. As the echoes of “Asche Bochor Abar Hobe” — she will return next year — fade into the distance, let the message of truth, courage, kindness and unity remain with us throughout the year. Maa Durga may leave our pandals, but she must never leave our hearts.
